Story out of the New York Times that discusses proposed deep cuts to New York Public Schools. Although sad and frustrating, this is the new fiscal reality. And Jewish Day Schools are sadly not immune to this either. I was in Montreal over Pesach break, and colleagues and friends there were discussing the impending closure of Herzliah St. Laurent, where dozens of teachers will lose their jobs. And because of collective agreements, new and amazing teachers at Herzliah Snowdon (where the two entities will merge) will be out of jobs as the teachers with more seniority assume positions that secure their ongoing employment.
Who loses? The students.
